Developments in the Dutch healthcare landscape over the last 10 years led to the guidelines committee implementing a major change in the national protocols for ambulance care in 2023. Since the early 1990s, the Dutch national ambulance care protocols have been periodically published in book form. The guidelines committee, which is composed of ambulance nurses and doctors, is appointed and supported by the national association of all ambulance services, Ambulancezorg Nederland. The guideline for highly complex ambulance care was last published in book form in 2016. In 2021, an additional guideline for ambulance care of low and medium complexity was published. The guidelines committee has developed a new Ambulancezorg app for iOS and Android, which, among other things, includes both sets of guidelines for all ambulance care professionals. The new, improved app became available in spring 2023. It includes the new ninth version of the national ambulance care protocol for high-complexity ambulance care as well as district information about hospitals. The information provided by the app can be updated easily and accessed even without internet or Wi-Fi. The app also incorporates the SPART-methodology. The SPART-methodology is a five-step ambulance care process that helps professionals make clinical decisions. The addition of the SPART model is endorsed by the National Inspectorate of Health and Youth Health and even noted as increasing the likelihood of making the best clinical decision. Professionals are the inspirators of all these developments.
