Introduction

Road traffic accidents remain one of the major causes of death in young adults. Most of these patients are categorized as having mild traumatic brain injuries, but a significant percentage suffer moderate or severe injuries.

Objective

To determine the results of clinical simulation training in craniocerebral trauma for paramedicine students and prehospital care professionals to identify the level of the teaching-learning process.

Methods

A pre-experimental study with a quantitative approach was performed with a nonprobabilistic, nonrandom convenience sample with a population of 55 sixth-semester students of the Instituto Universitario American College and a second sample with 11 firefighters of the Girón fire department. A theoretical-practical pretest and posttest were carried out to evaluate the level of knowledge of both groups. A CONSORT diagram was used for the distribution of the research. For data analysis, a Student’s t-test and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used in SPSS version 23 statistical software.

Results

A t-test for dependent samples was obtained for each group or treatment (American College and Firefighters). The p-value was 0.000, indicating that were significant differences between pretest and posttest scores.

Conclusion

The teaching-learning process during professional training in careers such as Paramedicine or Emergency Medicine should be carried out in real scenarios that facilitate the development of skills and abilities in decision-making in an emergency, as well as the student's understanding of the protocols applied to stabilize a patient. Therefore, the use of simulators in the prehospital area is an essential part in the fulfillment of this academic objective.
